Vandenberg Air Force Base, nestled along the stunning central coast of California, is where the Froggy Forts story begins! This extraordinary 99,579-acre installation not only serves its military mission but also protects habitats for 18 federally threatened or endangered species, including the iconic California red-legged frog. From coastal beaches and dunes to wetlands and freshwater marshes, this special place is where our passion for creating safe, sustainable homes for frogs first took root—right in the heart of nature’s most diverse landscapes.
The Frog Fortress Dome Shape was inspired by American engineer, architect, and futurist Buckminster Fuller. He believed in a Universe that was generative and self-supporting, self-sustaining and built with the inherent ability to provide for all life forms it contained.
The Frog Fortress offers an extraordinary way to bring the wonders of nature right to your yard! Enjoy all the benefits that frogs will bring to your backyard ecosystem and to you.
In the Spring of 1983, Gary was working as a weatherman at Vandenberg Air Force Base, CA. It was an unusually wet spring, and he woke one night to frog calls erupting from an empty lot near his barracks. Fast forward a few days... and Gary gathered tadpoles and secretly built a tiny pond under his bed. Five weeks later (and after passing-with-flying-colors at least one Commander's Inspection), Gary had frogs jumping all over his room!!! Over the next few months, Gary earned his new nickname - The Frog Man. And about a year later, when his service with the Air Force was over, Gary and his beloved pet frogs left California together and moved to Minnesota.
Over the next few years, Gary landed his Dream Job at Kennedy Space Center and helped launch Space Shuttles and rocket payloads. His passion for frogs persisted... he worked and worked on developing patented indoor/outdoor frog habitats - with the power and technology of space ships - and the desire to reverse biodiversity loss.
Now in present day, Gary and his Team are ready to play a significant role in global conservation efforts to reduce biodiversity loss by sharing his 10+ inventions with the world!!!
Kyle’s life has been hopping with frogs—literally! It all started in November 2010 when he and his wife Sheri welcomed their first son, Justin. The very first gift they received? A tiny green froggy blanket. Little did they know, this small token would launch the Sather family into a full-blown "froggy life."
For the next 14 years, their lives revolved around frogs, from hosting Froggy Birthday Parties to restoring local wetlands. Sheri’s creative spark and big heart then led to the creation of JustinsFrogProject.com, and from that point on, there was no turning back. Their project not only saved frogs but also expanded into global conservation efforts across the USA, Ecuador, Panama, Cameroon, and Tanzania.
Now, Kyle and Gary have teamed up to co-found SymSyn and Froggy Forts, combining their love for frogs with a mission to make backyard conservation a reality for everyone, while also leading large-scale conservation efforts around the globe. A froggy life turned into a conservation adventure, and they’re inviting you to be part of it!
